Billy Burke Open Member - Member

From it’s inception in 1921 until 1962, Clearwater C.C. had a “Winter” and “Summer” Pro.  William John "Billy" Burke (December 14, 1902 - April 19, 1972) began working with the Winter Pro in the late 1920’s (when not on tour).  In the 1931 U.S. Open at Inverness C.C. in Toledo, Ohio, Billy Burke and George Von Elm were tied at 292 after the regulation 72 holes.  In those days, ties were settled by a 36 hole playoff, and both players were again tied at 149 after the first playoff.  Billy finally won the second playoff by one stroke with a total of 148 and became the 1931 U.S. Open Champion.  Incidentally, the ’31 Open was the first major event won with steel shafted clubs.  Billy also reached the semi-finals of the PGA Championship, won four tour events and was selected for the Ryder Cup team in 1931, winning his only match.

In November 1948,  Billy was hired as the Winter Pro at Clearwater C.C. and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1962.  He was awarded an Honorary Life Membership in 1963, in recognition of his many years of valuable service to the club.  In 1966, Billy Burke was inducted into the P.G.A. Hall of Fame.
